i-Ready Diagnostic Test
The i-Ready Diagnostic test is a computer adaptive assessment designed to provide parents with actionable insight into student needs. The assessment is untimed, which means students are able to spend as long as they need on each question, and time spent taking the assessment does not impact their score. Even though untimed, the average duration of the i-Ready Diagnostic Test is about 45 minutes per subject--reading + math. (This does not include time taken for breaks.)
Estimated Total Active Testing Time by Grade Level Per Subject:
01
K - 1st Grade
25-35 minutes
02
2nd - 5th Grade
40-60 minutes
03
6th - 12th Grade
60-75 minutes
Although untimed, the average duration of the i-Ready Diagnostic Test is about 45 minutes per subject.
We recommend allowing your child to take breaks every 15-20 minutes, or as needed.
*Actual amount of questions and testing time will vary for each student. It is recommended to stop/save to take breaks every 15-20 minutes.
How It Works
This test is an untimed, computer-adaptive diagnostic test designed to assess your child’s academic abilities. Unlike traditional exams, it doesn’t have a simple pass or fail outcome. Instead, it uses a sophisticated algorithm to adjust the difficulty of each question based on your child's answers, creating a personalized assessment experience. When a question is answered correctly, the next one becomes more challenging. If answered incorrectly, the difficulty level decreases. This adaptive process continues throughout the test to provide a clear picture of your child’s strengths and areas for growth, based on grade-level state and national standards.
It’s completely normal for your child to answer roughly half of the questions correctly and half incorrectly. Please reassure them that this is part of the process and encourage them to stay calm, as the test is designed to challenge their knowledge. Understanding how the test works will help them stay focused and not get discouraged by difficult questions.
After completing the test, you’ll receive valuable data that provides a detailed overview of your child’s academic performance. This information will highlight areas where they excel and identify what they still need to learn, offering a roadmap for future academic growth—both at their current grade level and beyond.
To help your child stay focused, we recommend they take short breaks every 15–20 minutes by saving their progress, or as needed.

When should my child take this test?
We recommend having your child take this test 3 times throughout the school year—at the beginning, middle, and end. This will allow you to track their growth and progress, ensuring they stay on track and meet their academic goals for the year.
How soon can I receive my child's test results?
After your child completes a subject's test, their numerical score will be available immediately in their student account. Once both the reading and math tests are completed, please contact us to request your child's official test report. This report includes detailed information beyond the numerical scores and is required for the Step Up For Students PEP scholarship testing at the end of the school year. We're happy to email this test report directly to you.
